About the Program
Valley HealthCare System is an approved provider of the West Virginia Safety and Treatment Program, a required course for residents who have been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The program requires 18 hours of DUI education. The goal of the course is for each participant who completes the program to resolve never to drink and drive again. Sessions are generally three hours in length and are held once or twice a week for the duration of the course.
Various strategies are used to amplify the message of safe driving. To illustrate the impact of drunk driving, instructors share statistics on statewide accidents and fatalities. Medical data shows how combining even small amounts of drugs and alcohol can adversely affect a person’s ability to drive. Myths that surround social drinking are discussed and dispelled. Participants often finish our classes with a sense of gratitude. There’s an unspoken understanding that their impaired driving could have sent them to prison for vehicular homicide, or worse.
Upon completion of the class, each participant is evaluated by a certified clinician on Valley’s staff. This evaluation is a state requirement that helps to determine if further treatment is needed for a substance use disorder. If the evaluation reveals no apparent need for additional treatment, the participant submits proof of course completion to the state. A driver’s license will not be reissued until the state receives the completed paperwork.
In cases where the evaluation calls for further treatment, the participant may choose to enter Valley’s treatment program for substance use disorder. To speak to a team member about Valley’s residential treatment for substance use disorder, call 304-296-1731.
Classes are held at one of Valley’s locations in Morgantown or Fairmont. At this time, the state has not approved online classes for this program. Because class schedules vary depending on the number of participants, we suggest calling in advance to discuss options. We can also answer any questions during registration.
